When Nature Calls

Potable water is scarce up here but indoor plumbing has been even harder to find in most of the locations we have been in. Save for being in a town, nature calling means heading for some variation of ye old outhouse. These facilities run the gamut from pristine to, well, not. Generally its pretty simple, clean and well-ventilated go a long way towards a pleasant visit to the loo but we also appreciated the whimsical designs of some that we had the chance to visit.

In Alaska most facilities are the spartan precast concrete structures that you'd see in any state or national park. Though most are clean the American model seems to be intent on minimizing ventilation. In Canada most we've seen have been spotless and also airy. I'm not any sort of outhouse engineer so can't weigh in on the technical pro's and cons of either style but if you head up this way I'd hazard a guess as to which you'd prefer. Anyway, as I mentioned, some do have a whimsical flair and here are some examples... Gotta  go!
